About Us: The Capitan Public Library and the Smokey Bear’s Hometown Association are working together towards our respective goals of a building expansion project and playground project. The following is a brief description of our different activities.
Capitan Public Library
Capitan Public Library, staffed entirely by volunteers, is one of two full-service public libraries in Lincoln County. It serves not only Capitan but the communities of Lincoln, Carrizozo, Nogal and the area ranching families. Numerous programs are held for both children and adults. Currently, the Board is conducting a building campaign for the purpose of adding an expansion. The current building has reached capacity - most programs are held when the library is closed for regular business or in the Village Meeting Room. This facility would also benefit other organizations such as Smokey Bear’s Hometown Association, Girl Scouts, and the Lion’s Club. The library is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization – all donors receive a tax form.
Hours: Tues - Thurs 10:00 am to 6:00 pm Fri - Sat 10:00 am - 2:00 pm For more infomation, Please contact the Capitan Public Library at:

A playground is an important part of any community, encouraging physical activity in children. The play in playground develops motor skills and social skills. The Smokey Bear Historical Park playground is the only public playground in Capitan, but the equipment is outdated. The Smokey Bear’s Hometown Association, Capitan PTA and many others are working on a renovation. The new equipment will have a forest ranger theme with a lookout tower, a fire pole, a rescue net for climbing up or down to the back of the tower, a child size wooden fire truck, binoculars big enough to crawl through and a combination of tires and ladders for a challenge course of balance and coordination. Additionally there will be a rock climbing wall, both spiral and straight slides, and a row of swings that includes a 360 tire swing. We are half way to our goal of $35,000 and need more support from the community in raising the rest. We could use a few people skilled in woodworking and construction, and there are numerous little tasks up to and including the days we will build the structures that need volunteers. If you would like to help, call the Park at 354-2748 and Rebecca will connect you to just the right coordinator for the way in which you’d like to contribute.
